Infertility : My experiences

Dear All,

We got married  four years before and after two years we were looking to have a kid. Soon we realized that there were some medical problems involved and we needed to consult a Gynac. We consulted two Gynacs for 6 months each and had various tests done. But my wife was quite tired of the medical procedures and we thought of taking a break. During the break I happened to visit Ayurvedic consultant at BhaktiVedant Hospital) in Mira road, Mumbai. We had medication for over a year and finally got a good news. The reason behind writing this blog is put down some of my experiences and general approach towards problems in conceiving. Of course, one must consult a proper Gynac for treatment but the blog will help to foresee some of the problems and be prepared for them.

For Men-
1. Couple can have basic health check up for both husband and wife.
2. The first test husband can do on his own is 'Sperm Test', it gives a count sperms per ml. The healthy range is above 30 million per ml. It is easiest, shortest and cheapest(Rs.100-200 in Mumbai) test. One can get report within a day.
3. Other test that can be done is 'Sperm Analysis'. This checks if there are infections present in sperm that can harm wife. The test is little expensive (Rs.400-500 in Mumbai) and takes 2-3 days to get the report.
The above are basic tests to confirm if husband has any problem.

Health Tips-
1. Take proper sleep (6-7 hrs at least) daily and have proper diet like panchamrit, milk, only vegetarian food.
2. Keep mental stress away, the stress does affect quality of sperms.
3. Check if you have acidity problems, if so get a medication on those.
4. Make 'sperm test' once in two months for monitoring.

For Women-
To begin with, women's health is very much important in this case.
Specially family must support them. In typical Indian middle class, women are at stress and have to face people who often ask about pregnancy.
Before going for any tests the women can track few things as routine activities are,
1. Monitor your menstrual cycles(MC). Keep a note of dates. This is important when you speak to a Gynac. They ask for this information.
2. Any complications or unnatural problems during MCs. Do not ignore these, check with a proper Gynac.
3. Keep check on weight, whether steady or there are any up and downs. Above average weight can be a problem to conceive in current metro cities, although not necessary.
4. Ovulation study - It is to keep track during MCs, and find out on which day the ovulation occurs. Ovulation means, the eggs from ovaries are pushed out to Fallopian tubes. Intercourse during this period effectively results in pregnancy. There are ovulation kits recently available in medical stores, but good to have a suggestion from Gynac and then to go for it( as I do not have information on its effectiveness).
There are a number of tests my wife went through during the treatment. None of the tests actually revealed the real cause. But every test had some purpose to zero in on a problem.

Health tips-
1. Strictly keep a vegetarian diet.
2. Go to bed at 10 pm, with no excuses. Sleeping at this time relaxes body, keeps you active and hormones in control.
3. Have breakfast before 10 in the morning. Never skip it. Eat regular food i.e. roti, sabji, etc. You can have light lunch then. No need of special breakfast like bread, jam etc. Make your own breakfast.
4. Include milk and ghee in every food item you eat. from break fast, lunch, dinner. It has been scientifically proved that ghee does not cause excess weight. In Ayurveda ghee has immense importance in diet. Preferable cow ghee. This helps to regularize excretion and also improves general health.
5. Do not eat packed food or at least minimize it as much as you can.
6. Whenever you cook food, eat within 3 hours. Never eat anything of morning or previous day.
7. Do regular household work, if you are working then check your sitting postures at office, have long walks in the mornings.
8. Avoid using two wheeler during ovulation period. At other times, be a pillion rider with both the legs on one side.

The last point, a very important point. I do not force everyone to believe but would request to follow. Be spiritual, believe in GOD. Be humble to the thought of God. I don't say go to temple and pray but keep God alive in your mind. Consider Him as if He is going to solve your problems. Request Him like a friend. Eventually your mind starts to get peaceful. It helps to remove unwanted stress.
In this case specially husband should pro-actively support their wife by first following spirituality. Discuss about Godly things which are of common interest. Read literature. Help your wife to follow her dietary habits. Women are very sensitive, assure them that you are caring to them and can support them in any case. Read a book called 'Garbh Sanskar' by Dr. Balaji Tambe. It has a good set instructions about how begin when you want to have a kid and also during care to be taken during pregnancy.

Human assisted reproduction options-
This option although I do not suggest, but kept for your information.
IUI (intrauterine insemination)-
You may find detailed information about this procedure on internet. When ovulation occurs, then sperm solution are passed to ovary using medical instrument.
But during this process, women are given injections to bring harmones at specific levels. This is a common and first step on artificial conceiving.
This costs nearly (4k-5k) per procedure.

IVF (In vitro fertilisation) / Test tube baby-
I do not have detailed information on this procedure but this is the last option that a couple can go for. This is expensive (nearly Rs 1 lakh or more).
But this involves a strict medication procedure with regular and timely course of harmone injections.
Women may feel tired if clinic is at a long distance from home.

Note-
I have written this blog with personal experiences and have intention to direct couples having similar problems. There could be better ways to improve the chances. Feel free to post your comments. May God bless us all !!
